Dr. Ralph Evans developed in Hoboken, New Jersey, in the early 1940s Thioglycolic Acid as an active material for cold wave permanents. Today mainly TGA salts are used in cosmetic applications for hair perms, straighteners and depilatories.

Thiolactic Acid (TLA, 2-Mercaptopropionic Acid) is predominantly used in cosmetic applications, hair permanent waving formulations. Instead of using the Acid itself, the Salts are used because they are safer to handle. Compared to Thioglycolic Acid based formulations the TLA based perms are softer and mor gentle on the hair. Conversely, TLA can also be used in a hair perm formulation as an enhancer to obtain a stronger perm by adding it to a Thioglycolic Acid based formulation.

TLA Salts

Ammonium Thiolactate is the most common product used in hair perms, if non-toxic raw materials are preferred.

Ammonium Thiolactate can also be used in auto rim cleaning or metal cleaning formulations. In these applications, it is also advantageous that it is classified as non-toxic.


TLA's unique reducing properties make it acceptable for use in a wide variety of chemical reactions including addition, elimination, or cyclization reactions. TGA's sulfur group (-SH) will react in the presence of bases, acids, ketone groups or organic halogens. In the presence of alcohols or amines, the carboxylic group will react preferentially.
